We have worked across the England for Paperchase and there was no change when we called in to work at their new flagship store in Buchanan Street, Glasgow.

The design team really pushed the boundaries with some bold and exciting works – we were just as eager as them to get started.

Our works included;

• Feature staircase, curved with plain plate treads and ultra-fine black GRP anti-slip coverings and white nosings
• Frameless glass balustrade curved to stairs plus gallery – toughened glass with square stainless steel slotted tube top rail
• Sprinkler pipework under stairs
• Art flooring – including steelwork frame and toughened laminated glass flooring
• Display framework
• Scenic lift shaft steel framework
• Ceiling grid framework
• Ships ladder
• Shopfront steelwork
• Various fabricated metalwork items

Mezzanine floors have to be compliant to the following statutory requirements:

Building Regulations 2000 (England and Wales applicable)

Structure : Approved Document A
Fire Safety: Approved Document B
Stairs, ramps and guards: Approved Document K
Means of access for disabled: Approved Document M

Please also refer to structural steel code BS 5950: Parts 1 and 5 – Structural use of Steel Buildings, BS 6399 Part 1: Code of practice for dead and imposed loads and BS 5395 : Parts 1 and 3.

To one side of the stairs it may be balustrade and the other wall rail, or it may be balustrade or wall rail to both sides.

Type of balustrade include;

• Stainless steel uprights with glass infill panels
• Stainless steel uprights with perforated infill panels
• Mild steel uprights with perforated infill panels
• Galvanised steel uprights with mesh infills
• Upright posts with a top and mid rail (used for maintenance or occasional use where there are no children)
• Upright posts with vertical infill bars
• Frameless glass balustrade

It is important to remember that if children may use the stairs then there should be no gap bigger than 100mm.

Being experienced architectural metalworkers, we are able to manufacture and install various types of balustrading at our factory in Birmingham.

Cat Ladders

Access stairs or cat ladders generally provide access to roof and other floors where space is restricted. They are only to be used for occasional maintenance or emergency use.

Components for access stairs or cat ladders will generally consist of;

• Flats for ladder section
• Steps or rungs
• F-rails
• Ladder feet
• Ladder stays
• Splice joint or fish plate
• Cage
• Hoops

They will nearly always be hot dip galvanised.

Client: Birmingham Airport Limited
Project: New airport lounge
Location: Birmingham International Airport
Duration: 1 month

This new No 1 Traveller lounge was a new and exciting project for us at Birmingham International.

The lounge is the company’s first to open outside London and will be accessible to all of the 4.5 million passengers departing from the airport every year. It will offer the business traveller a work-friendly environment and range of business support services. For the leisure traveller it will offer a new standard of premium pre-flight hospitality, to start a holiday or for any special occasion.

Our works included;

• Raised floor steelwork including support posts and folded ppc aluminium cladding
• Roof bracings
• New steel staircase with laser cut stringers
• Frameless glass balustrade to staircase, landing and gallery with stainless steel toprail
• Stainless steel balustrade and metalwork to smokers lounge balcony

Due to the size of some of the support steels, these had to be brought in through the side of the building and through the departure lounge. This work, along with other parts, had to be carried out during the night when the airport was closed to ensure passengers were not disturbed or inconvenienced.

A prestigious project in Central London, Morris Fabrications Ltd were required to carry out a range of metalwork tasks. An accelerated programme was in place and a quality finish was high on the agenda.

These works were successfully carried out prior, during, and after the London 2012 Olympic Games.

• Two new steel staircases
• Fabricated steel surrounds to columns
• Mirrored panels fitted to column surrounds
• ‘Living wall’ steelwork
• Raised floor steelwork
• Support and secondary steelwork

• Retractable bridge (to allow jet and other large items to be brought in and out of building)
